Shenzhen is one of the easiest cities in China for international students to obtain a hukou, or household registration. Unlike other cities, there are no requirements for social security or physical examinations for international students to obtain a hukou in Shenzhen. However, some students may choose to seek the assistance of a hukou agency to help with the process.
The cost for obtaining a hukou varies depending on the agency, but generally ranges from 1800 to 2000 RMB. The process takes approximately 1-2 months.
In order to be eligible for obtaining a hukou in Shenzhen, international students must meet one of the following conditions:
1. Hold a bachelor's degree or above from a foreign university, including those who have obtained permanent residency in the country they studied in or have re-entry qualifications.
2. Work or study for one year or more at a foreign university or research institution and achieved certain accomplishments as a visiting scholar or post-doctoral student.
The age limit for obtaining a hukou is as follows: under 35 years old for bachelor's degree holders, under 40 years old for master's degree holders, and under 45 years old for PhD holders.
There are three types of hukou: property family hukou, company collective hukou, and police station talent special hukou. The property family hukou is suitable for individuals who own property in Shenzhen or have relatives who own property. The company collective hukou is suitable for those whose companies have collective hukou. The police station talent special hukou is suitable for most working people who can establish stability and convenience for long-term residency.
For international students who do not have a job or property in Shenzhen, they can still obtain a hukou by finding a police station to register as a long-term resident.
The required documents for obtaining a hukou in Shenzhen include: foreign degree certification, identity card, marriage certificate (if married), household registration book, birth certificate (if bringing children), and graduation certificate.
It is important to note that those who are divorced must provide their divorce certificate, agreement or judgment, and mediation agreement.
As of now, there is no subsidy for obtaining a hukou for international students who hold a master's degree or below. However, a subsidy policy for PhD holders under 35 years old is currently being developed.
In conclusion, while it is relatively easy for international students to obtain a hukou in Shenzhen, it is important to follow the correct procedure and provide the necessary documents to ensure a smooth process.
